Use an existing Microsoft SQL Server instance

By default, the Acctivate Installer will create the “ACCTIVATE” named instance of SQL Server 2008 R2 Express unless a previously installed SQL Server instance exists that is specifically named ACCTIVATE.

Acctivate can be installed with an existing SQL Server instance that is NOT named ACCTIVATE. Use the procedure below to install Acctivate to utilize your existing SQL Server instance.

  1. Download Acctivate (Full Install) and save the installation file.
  2. Locate the Acctivate installation file and Rename the file to setup.exe
    • NOTE: Simply rename to “setup” if the file extension (i.e. exe) is not visible
  3. Open a new Command Prompt window from the Start Menu
  4. Change Directory (CD) to the location of the Acctivate installer file
    • The default Downloads folder is below the User directory (e.g. C:\Users\YourName\Downloads).  The CD Downloads command will likely switch to the proper directory.
  5. Execute the Acctivate installer using one of the commands below.

Command Options

Option A: Connect with SQL Authentication (PREFERRED method for Acctivate)

  1. Copy/Paste the following into the Command Prompt:
    setup /sqlserver:SERVERNAME\INSTANCE /sqluid:sa /sqlpwd:password
  2. Replace SERVERNAME\INSTANCE with the full SQL Server instance name
  3. Replace sa with the SQL Login that is a member of the sysadmin SQL Server role
  4. Replace password with the password for that SQL Login
  5. Press ENTER to start the installation

Option B: Connect with Windows Authentication

  1. Copy/Paste the following into the Command Prompt:
    setup /sqlserver:SERVERNAME\INSTANCE /sqltrusted
  2. Replace SERVERNAME\INSTANCE with the full SQL Server instance name
  3. Press ENTER to start the installation

Demo Company

You can also install Acctivate without loading the Demo company database with the /nodemo switch. Combining these into one script would be something like:

setup /sqlserver:SERVERNAME\INSTANCE /sqluid:sa /sqlpwd:password /nodemo

Alternatively, the following command would utilize Windows Authentication:

setup /sqlserver:SERVERNAME\INSTANCE /sqltrusted /nodemo
